Joan Stevens
GFWC Woman’s Club of Greenfield
Joan Stevens, GFWC Woman’s Club of Greenfield, has earned the name of the Tree Lady and had a park dedicated in her name. Her efforts in the City of Greenfield go back to the 1980’s when she noticed a median that had no flowers or trees. That began her intense efforts to beautify the city. She joined the Business Association and formed the first Beautification Task Force, followed by initiating the first Arbor Day Celebration where 135 trees were planted the first day.
She went on to be instrumental in creating the City Forester position, created and led Garden tours, began neighborhood landscaping awards, led annual City Hall flower planting day, led the first Volunteer City Cleanup Day and initiated the first City Tree Commission.
In addition, she coordinated the City Officials efforts to install welcome and population signs at 40 entrances to the city. As the Mayor of Greenfield said, her leadership is single-handedly responsible for making this city cleaner, more beautiful and a better place to live. Residents, young and old, present and future owe a debt of gratitude to her for her tireless work in helping maker her city the great and beautiful place it is today.
